Flying Mural Project
Part I: 'City Mice, Country Mice'
This is the first in a series of aerial drone videos highlighting the many 'walk stopping' Murals in the downtown Eugene, Oregon area.
Feeding two birds with one seed, this lucky building features two stunning pieces. On one side we have quite the convincing Tuscany city street scape in black and white by local artist, Jim Evangelista. You could really walk right into this one if you weren't paying attention.
On the flip side of this coin is a colorful work celebrating all of the Mamas of the world. This piece squeezes some tasty lemonade out of the lemons presented. By incorporating a road lined with telephone poles, local artist Ila Rose uses the telephone pole and cables, that would otherwise be blocking the image, to bring the viewer in.

Part II: 'Creatures of the Sea'
This fun piece features two magnificent murals depicting a few of the many creatures of the sea. The first work, by local mural artist Bayne Gardner, is on the Falling Sky Brewery Bldg. located across the street from the fire station on 13th and Willamette.
The second mural, by Sydney Waerts of the Netherlands, can be found on 7th and Polk gracing the parking lot of the yummy, vegan soul food restaurant, Cornbread Cafe.

Part III: 'Hidden Treasure'
And the Eugene, Oregon mural extravaganza rolls on with these two little eye catching hidden treasures. The first mural, by Hush of the UK, is located on the backside of the Falling Sky Brewing Bldg. on 13th and Willamette. The second piece is tucked away on the side of the Equinox Realty Bldg. on 11th between Mill St. and High St. Both of these pieces are situated on one-way streets such that you would only see them in passing if you happen to look backwards over your shoulder while you are driving...not advised. Best to enjoy these as a pedestrian.

I have always been amazed by an artist's ability to create on a large scale. Equally impressive to me is the skill and attention to detail required to paint a life-like image.
This first piece by Australian muralist Fintan Magee, a magnificent mural on the south wall of the Eugene Chamber of Commerce Building at 1401 Willamette St., gives us the best of both worlds, as it could very well be a gigantic two story photograph.
The second mural in the spotlight, a charming little piece by Steven Lopez, tucked away in a quiet nook of downtown Eugene on the corner of 13th and Oak, is an awesome image of a winged lady. I like to think she is a Dragonfly Lady, though I believe her inspiration to come from the idea of butterfly wings growing out of tree branches. One of the many fascinating qualities of art, it is always open to interpretation by the viewer.

Mad props to this local artist, Bayne Gardner. Talk about getting yourself out there. Every corner I turn, I see another magnificent mural by him. I have driven by these pieces several times a week for the past eight years. I just noticed them the other day for the first time, tucked away in the back end of a pay parking lot on busy Willamette Street right next to Stargate. And if these two murals weren't enough of a surprise, don't you know that there was a whole wall of bonus murals hiding on the dark side of the building! Score!

You get 5-in-1 with this edition of the Eugene Flying Mural Project! All on the same block of downtown Eugene, and all stunning in their own right.
We open up with the very long north facing wall of the Kiva natural foods market where Argentinian/Spanish muralist Hyuro tells a story of creation and destruction, and how sometimes perspective can be the only distinction. At least that's the story I see. Have a look for yourself, and see what story you perceive.
The street art parade continues as we skirt the perimeter of the Eugene LTD Bus Station to get a better view of...wait a tick! What is this?! Another sneaker hiding in the alley way between Olive and Willamette on the north side of 10th. Actually, two of them. The large portrait peeking out onto the road is another mural by local Bayne Gardner, while the dancing duo with the rat audience is by French street artist Blek Le Rat. Two pieces definitely worth an extended glance.
Finally we come to the MacDonald Theatre Bldg.! The 'piece de resistance'! Wow...just, WOW! The dimensions of the two murals on this building overlooking the Eugene LTD Bus Station are nothing shy of ginormous! On the south facing wall we get to enjoy an intriguing piece of art by Argentinian muralist Fanco JAZ Fasoli.
Facing west is a surreal looking mural, one of my favorites to date! American artist, Beau Stanton gives us a deeply meditative image of a native shaman-like man receiving, or is he emitting, the universal life force energy. Perhaps it's both. Fantastical pieces of work, not to be missed.

Part VIII: 'Beauty in Simplicity
& A Local Tribute'
I can honestly say that I had no idea what kind of can I was opening up with this Flying Mural Project! I mean, I knew Eugene had it's share of street art, but holy moly! Sincerely every corner I turn, every shift of the glance, I am encountered with another original art piece bringing life to what would otherwise be a blank wall blocking the view of Pacha Mama's natural wonders.
Here, on a stretch of short retaining walls along South Willamette Street, are several fun murals. The first two by artists unknown, are wonderful examples of the beauty that can be found in simplicity. The third piece, by local Eugene artist Ila Rose, is a sweet tribute to Wiley Griffon, one of Eugene's first black residents to own land in the 1890's, known for his work in public transportation.

I really enjoy this first piece by muralist Shamsia Hassani of Afghanistan. Overlooking Capella natural food market and South Willamette St., this is a treat for anyone headed into town from the south hills. It is a profoundly simple image that really jumps out and pulls you in.
We travel from Afghanistan to Tibet as local artist Jim Evangelista keeps the show rolling with the second mural. This very long work of art gives a bit of depth to an otherwise small parking lot at Riva's Taco Shop.

This first mural, by local artist Kari Johnson, overlooking the Food for Lane County Dining Room where hot meals are served up with dignity and grace five days a week, really brings it all together. We have cultural and generational diversity, community, stewardship of the land, all of the natural elements, and so much love, all with the industrious city bustling away in the background. Bravo!
Nepalese muralist, Kiran Maharjan, brings an international flavor into the mix with this next piece, a striking three story high mural on the Northwest Martial Arts Bldg. that will have you puzzled. Is it a gigantic collage made with pieces of larger than life photographs?! No, it's really all painted! Simply fascinating! The detail in the hands and fingers down to the fingerprints, and all of the years of experience wrinkled into the skin on this ancient soul, it's quite surreal!

I quite enjoying all of the portals into other worlds that local muralist, Kari Johnson, has created all over Eugene, Oregon! This first highlighted piece is a fine example of just that. The way in which she seemlessly weaves together so many different elements of life is fascinating, soothing, and gives hope of unity and community in a world that feels shattered at times.
The second mural is one of those hidden treasures I've mentioned in the past. It is tucked away on the outskirts of the University of Oregon campus, just off the Ruth Bascom River Trail. I searched for the artist to no avail. It feels familiar, likely by a local artist, this mural is all about bounty in harvest, weaving connections, and transformation. The overgrown vegetation infront of the mural both obscures it, and blends it together with nature.

What a fabulous message Telmo Miel of the Netherlands delivers with this first ginormous mural! Slow Down!
Spanning half a city block, this work of art was no small feat. What a beautifully calming image to overshadow the hustle and bustle of small city Eugene, Oregon life.
Just a few more blocks north on Charnelton is a super fun little mural by Steven Lopez of the USA! Elephants have always held a dear place in my heart, and so have badass warriors. This mural is a wonderful fusion of the two, guarding the east wall of High Priestess Tattoo Parlor on 7th and Charnelton.

Part XIII: 'Predators, Prey, & Humans' Best Friend'
When I said this guy really gets himself out there, I wasn't just blowing smoke. Local muralist, Bayne Gardner, is truly all over Eugene, Oregon and thesurrounding areas. In this, Part XIII of the Eugene Flying Mural Project, we have highlighted four fun smaller pieces, all by Bayne.
The little Frenchie on the Healthy Pet Bldg in South Eugene is a fantastic example of Bayne's attention to detail. This sweet little puppy dog blends right in with the colors of the building and sign, at the same time as it jumps right out, begging for ear scratches and tummy rubs.
On to the Caddis Fly Shop in Downtown Eugene. Here we see the local artist's affinity for Trout, jumping off the east wall; while the classic PNW icon, the Yetti, walks off the west wall in his finest angler get-up.
And finally, brightening the south wall of a small apartment building on 5th and Monroe, we see the Osprey with meal-in-talons. ¡Buen provecho!

Eugene's mural scene is truly off the hook! Here we are on Part XIV (that's 14), and we aren't even halfway there! The two pieces featured in 'Birds of a Feather', both by different local artists, just went up this year.
We begin with a beautifully colorful Hummingbird image overlooking the park on 17th and Charnelton. Apparently created by three different local artists unknown, this eye catcher will pull you in from all the way across the lawn.
Next is another piece by local artist, Bayne Gardner. I'm pretty sure the paint is still wet on this one, as I saw him working on it just the other day. What is it, you ask? It's amazing and fantastic, watch the video to see for yourself.

Part XV: 'Pacha Mama and Her Creations'
I'm going to guesstimate that we are about 1/3 of the way through all of the murals on my list, and I'm positive that I am missing some! Eugene is just overflowing with creativity. It seems almost every day I discover a new gem. In fact, this project has caused me to change up my normal commuting routes in order to find new ways to pass through town, all in hopes of discovering more mural booty.
Fortunately, you don't have to go searching for the two featured pieces here, as they are located on 6th and Blair in downtown Eugene, Oregon. They are a fantastical tribute to Pacha Mama in all of her glory.
The first mural highlighted, by Esteban Steffensen of the USA, really captures the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest while incorporating some intriguing imagery fusing numerology, astrology, and the natural elements. This piece is an add on to one of my favorite Eugene murals, and Esteban did a great job of working off of what Local artist, Ila Rose, began in 2016.
That's right, the second mural on display is by Eugene's own, Ila Rose. Here is a magnitizing depiction of Pacha Mama made up of her many amazing creations, as if she is resting after all of her hard work.

As a studio artist and painter, I never liked to sign my work. I didn't care for the idea of covering the image with my name, so I would sign the back side of my paintings.
Well, these next two very fun little murals are signed, but illegible. If anyone has information regarding the creators of these pieces, please share.
"Good things come in small packages", or so the saying goes. In this case, I concur. This first, other dimensional piece, may be small, but appears to be a Narnia hole from a parallel Universe with a view of Earth.
On the other side of this wall is Everyone's Barber Shop. A quick peek into a man gettin' his hair did, and a powerful message for any time. It appears to have been created by the DB Crew, that's all I got.

Well, this next mural sure does fill up some space! So large, both dimensionally and energetically, that it gets a spotlight of it's own.
Artist, Hua Tunan of China, paints the town red as he shares an epic battle between two very large energies. Dragon vs Tiger, Fire vs Earth, Mars vs Saturn, and I see that this list of metaphors could go on and on! Have a look for yourself. What do you see?
One thing is for sure, and that is that Hua Tunan's style is unique and intriguing. We are fortunate, and I am grateful, to have his energy here in Eugene, Oregon.

Part 18 of the Eugene Flying Mural Project is another fruit of my newly turned leaf of changing up my driving routes.
I came upon this lucky little building, tucked away in the northeast corner of the Whit in Downtown Eugene, Oregon. Home to Going Green Eugene, one of seemingly hundreds of dispensaries in Eugene, it is tagged on the west wall with a classy, Graffiti style mural that will keep your eyes moving for days, while the south wall is masked with the enchanting green eyes of ... an owl?
The artist of the west wall Graffiti is unknown, besides the tag ARSTRAC-TZ. The mysterious green eyes are another piece by busy, local muralist Bayne Gardner.

Anyways, the Eugene Flying Mural Project flows ever forward with this captivating piece by, once local artist, Tori Bird Pope, now living in Hawai'i. Beautifying the west wall of Sundance Natural Foods, this work of art brings us into the fairytale that is Pacific Northwest Nature at its finest.
.
Next is a super fun galactic spacescape, tucked away in South Eugene, just around the corner from Sundance. My wife and I actually saw this piece in progress back in 2015. Had I known then what I know now, I'd probably be a millionaire, and I also would have introduced myself to the artist so I could give her credit. Unfortunately, this masterpiece was left unsigned by, anonymous local female artist.

Part XX: 'Beeings To Look Up To'
I know he lives in LA, but Steven Lopez is all over this town. This first piece by said muralist really brightens up the facade of the WildCraft Cider Works Building. It's a magnificent tribute to the Bee in all it's glory, and it will grab your eye and pull you in from a mile away. Shooting this mural was akin to what I imagine a wildlife photographer experiences in the realm of practicing patience. There is usually a big flatbed truck that lives immediately in front of this amazing work of art, obscuring a good portion of it, sadly. I stalked it for weeks before I caught it on a day when the truck was gone.
.
The second mural is by WK Interact. That's it, that's all I've got. I couldn't find anything else on this artist, but what a striking piece. Another wonderful tribute, this one to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It's funny, this mural is half a block away from 5 works of art that I have already captured, and it's two stories large. Yet it remained hidden from my eyes by an invisible veil until just recently. It was like magic the day the Veil was lifted. And what a magnificent evening I had for the video shoot.
